The common cold is viral infection of your nose and it’s usually harmless, although it might not feel that way. Colds are causes by viruses and expected to last 3-10 days; although may last longer in smokers.
Children are the most susceptible to colds; although adults should typically have about 3 colds a year.
Symptoms of a cold
Symptoms usually appear about 2 days after exposure to the virus.
Signs and symptoms include:
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Congestion
- Slight body aches or a mild headache
- Sneezing
- Low-grade fever
- Generally feeling unwell
Treatment
Unfortunately, there is no treatment for the common cold. Antibiotics are ineffective and inappropriate use of antibiotics contributes to antibiotic resistance.
However, painkillers, nasal sprays and occasionally cough syrups, may improve symptoms.
Also drinking plenty of fluids, soups; such as chicken soup, salt water gargling for sore throats, rest and staying in a warm environment may also help manage symptoms.
