World Immunization Week

World Immunization Week is a week set aside yearly to highlight the collective action needed to ensure that every person is protected from vaccine-preventable diseases. The theme for this year is: “Protected Together, “Vaccines Work”. Strategically, the aim is to encourage people at all level to add more effort in other to increase immunization coverage.

What is Immunization?

According to the World Health Organization “Immunization as the process whereby a person is made immune or resistant to an infectious disease, typically by the administration of a vaccine”.  The difference between vaccination and immunization; Vaccination is the administration of these vaccines (usually by injection) while immunization is what happens in your body after you have been vaccinated. These vaccines stimulate the body’s own immune system to protect the person against subsequent infection or disease.

Every year, between two to three million deaths are averted because of vaccination against most infectious diseases. Immunization process has been a proven tool for controlling and eliminating life-threatening infectious diseases.
