What is the Egina Project?
Egina is the largest investment project currently on-going in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria. The project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter, of 2018, within the initial budget of $16 billion.
The project is so exciting because it’s Nigeria’s largest FPSO project and also because of the number of Nigerians that have been trained in the process of its construction.
For those not familiar with the oil & gas industry; an FPSO (floating production storage and offloading) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing of oil/hydrocarbons and for the storage of oil.
FPSOs are preferred in frontier offshore regions as they are easy to install, and do not require a local pipeline infrastructure to export oil. FPSO vessels are particularly effective in remote or deep water locations, where seabed pipelines are not cost effective. They eliminate the need to lay expensive long-distance pipelines from the processing facility to an onshore terminal. This can provide an economically attractive solution for smaller oil fields, which can be exhausted in a few years and do not justify the expense of installing a pipeline. Furthermore, once the field is depleted, the FPSO can be moved to a new location.
Why is Egina particularly exciting for Nigeria?
Firstly, with a length of 330 metres; the Egina FPSO is the largest FPSO ever installed in Nigeria and the largest FPSO built by the Total Group worldwide. So this is a very proud moment for the Nigerian oil and gas industry.
In addition to this, Egina is also said to have the highest number of FPSO topside modules (six) to be fully fabricated and integrated in Nigeria. The assembly of the Integrated Control and Safety System of the FPSO was fully performed in Nigeria, while the project includes the fabrication of the largest subsea equipment (manifolds, risers) ever completed in Nigeria.
Already, 1,200 direct jobs have been created for Nigerians in the areas of project management, welding, fitting, logistics and other support services. This technology transfer and employment is important for economic stability and growth.
Furthermore, Egina operations will generate significant activities for local contractors, in various sectors and continue to provide avenues for the training and development of Nigerians in various domains.
