We faced a challenging air ambulance mission involving a 77-year-old American patient from Kenya to the US, who was treated for acute coronary disease. The condition of the patient demanded a swift transfer as he had developed several complications that affected vital organs. The team immediately initiated pre-flight processes, recommended, and ensured SLED dialysis was done to avert any complications inflight.

On the mission date, the patient was picked up from the medical facility uneventfully but became restless during the flight. Our team was able to keep him calm for the first 3 legs of the mission before handing over to our W2W partner. Going into the 4th leg, he became more restless and intolerant. The team verbally reassured and sedated him. Thankfully, the intervention proved successful, and he rested comfortably.

After over 20 hours flying time, 6 stops and implementation of an effective clinical inflight management course, the patient was handed over successfully to the admitting hospital in the US.

This case was an insightful experience for all involved. Flying Doctors Nigeria’s ability to navigate and address complexities associated with long-haul flights showcased our expertise in aeromedical transport and dedication to patient care.
