Governor Mimiko (Ondo State) Gives Flying Doctors Nigeria a Thumbs Up

Governor of Ondo State, his excellency, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has begun talks with the Flying Doctors Nigeria regarding how best the service can be utilised in his state, complementary to the state emergency response service that is also in development.

It’s a project that the governor can relate to both as a politician and as a doctor. "The need for rapid, effective, emergency response is undeniable" he said in a meeting with the companies CEO Dr Ola Orekunrin.

In the past, almost everyone with a complex head injury in Ondo state, died simply because there are no neurosurgeon’s in the state.

This is why the Flying Doctors Service is so revolutionary. In a state with a damningly high number of road traffic accidents and industrial trauma, many types of injury could only be managed in the tertiary centres of Lagos-a 4 hour journey, through difficult terrain. Less than 1% survive this journey.

Now this journey will take 30 mins, in a helicopter equipped with state of the art medical technology.

Dr Orekunrin says, "both Ondo and Lagos States have both shown leadership and decisiveness on this ground-breaking service" we hope others states will follow suit.
